4.05 Million Dollar Success For After School Programs in Allegany County ACCORD Corporation, a not for profit Community Action Agency in Allegany County will receive a 4.05 million dollar funding award from the NYS Department of Education. The 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant begins July 1st and is a five year funding cycle. The grant process was highly competitive with more than 280 grants reviewed across NYS and only 107 grants selected for funding. ACCORD will operate 21st CCLC programs in 6 school districts serving 866 students each year.
21st Century Community Learning Centers will serve middle and high school students in grades 5-12 at school based centers located in Bolivar-Richburg, Belfast, Canaseraga, Whitesville, Scio and the Immaculate Conception School in Wellsville. After school programs will offer academic support, social enrichment and youth development opportunities Monday-Thursday from 3-6 pm daily according to the school calendar and during July to support community recreation and school district summer school programs. School districts will provide transportation, a daily nutritious snack and faculty to provide academic instruction to students. Southern Tier Traveling Teacher, Inc. will provide in home GED services to 15 youth in target communities at risk of school drop out.
ACCORD’s 21st CCLC represents a partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Allegany County, Southern Tier Traveling Teacher, Inc., Alfred University’s Children’s Learning Center, Evalumetrics Research firm, the Wellsville Creative Arts Center and local health and human service agencies and civic groups in addition to the schools,. The program design was developed by students, parents, partnering agencies and school administrators.
Center activities will include a peer tutoring program, youth development and leadership activities, career exploration, monthly field trips for students to Alfred University and quarterly family events and community service projects. Home School Liaisons employed by ACCORD will work from each school Monday-Friday from 10-6pm to provide students and families with case management services including goal planning, service coordination and referrals. A High School Liaison employed by ACCORD will provide weekly programs for high school students focusing on leadership skills development, career exploration and service learning opportunities by a weekly rotation to school Centers. Literacy Volunteers of Allegany County will operate a peer tutoring program with high school students trained to work with middle school students. Other program aspects include incorporating Tiger Woods Foundation’s Start Something model for community service projects and Alfred University’s Rural Justice Institute faculty training after school program staff in Second Step for student character development lessons.

Ultimately, 866 youth, their families and communities with 21st CCL Centers will benefit from this success. 2-1-1 HELPLINE The Institute for Human Services, Inc is pleased to announce the official launch of 2-1-1 service in Steuben, Chemung, Allegany, Schuyler and Yates Counties, effective February 11, 2008.

ALLEGANY COUNTY MARKETING STUDY The Marketing Study was undertaken by Allegany County Economic Development, Allegany County Tourism, ACCORD Corporation and Stuart Brown Associates. The study was undertaken to identify strategies for marketing Allegany County communities to incease the visibility of Interstate 86 exits. Three Community Meetings gathered input from citizens and elected officials and sets forth several strategies to assist in the economic development and tourism promotion for the county.
